I have heard many people say that they feel the gospel is restrictive. They say that we do not have fun. They say we can not have wild parties, drink alcohol, challenge the laws, or have fun. Is it fun for a woman to find out that she is pregnant and does not have a man with her? Is it fun for a man to find out that he will be a father, but does not know if he will be able to raise his own child? Is it fun to find out that you have a liver that is about to fail because of drinking too much alcohol? Is it fun to be hung over? Is it fun to wake up in jail? I have known anyone to say they enjoy hospitals or jails for a vacation spot. God told us not to do things that lead to these places because he loves us, and does not want to see us suffer in hospitals and jails.
If we refrain from doing a few things, we can live much happier, healthier lives. I do not know of a single commandment that is not for the good of men. Let’s look at a few of them from the book of Exodus (second book of moses) chapter 20:
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
To have another god would lead to false religions. It would lead us from the path that our loving Heavenly Father has planed for us.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
This was in the Old Testament, before Christ’s visit to us around 30 AD. We need to keep an open mind about things that we do not know about. If we had made graven images of Christ before he came, what would have been the likelihood that we would have know him. Those that knew him were blessed. You can read in my article “About The Pharisees” about how it was for they wanted to find him but were blinded because of believing on too many lies derived from presumptions.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
We should not take the Lord’s name in vain, as we hear our own words. When we use the Lord’s name (or any reference to him for that matter) as a replacement for a foul or curse word, we are creating a reference in our minds to the Lord that is foul. This makes it harder to see God the way he is, and therefore makes it that much harder to live a guiltless life.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
In six days God created all things, and in the seventh day he rested. If God needed to take a break, how much more do we need to take a break ourselves. We also need time to focus on and remember him for us to repent to the ways of righteousness.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
This is in the scriptures, which in many cases is passes from generation to generation. Your parents naturally have a love for you. They have many years of experience over you as well. Following their guidence is wise, and can lead to what they have found (as they are your blood) that can make you happy. Families are eternal, so if you have contempt for your parents in this world, it will not end at death.
These are just a few examples. For questions of comments, reply to the post that your question or comment pertains to.
